Passed Lok Sabha test, bill to test Delhi officials at Rajya Sabha today

The opposition admits that the numbers are not on their side. But they say the debate will give them a chance to have their say.

Delhi’s controversial utility bill will be in Rajya Sabha today for discussion and vote. Although the Opposition is fiercely against it, it will go ahead without a hitch, with the support of Naveen Patnaik’s BJD and Andhra’s YSR Congress. The Delhi National Capital Territory Government Bill (Amendment) of 2023 – which replaces the Ordinance to strip officials from control of the Delhi government – has passed the Lok Sabha test. It was passed by a voice vote on Thursday amid an opposition walkout.

A hiccup is expected in the Rajya Sabha, where the NDA has yet to break through the majority barrier. The current strength of Rajya Sabha is 237 and for the most part 119.

The BJP and its allies have 105 members and will win support from the ruling YSR Congress of Biju Janata Dal and Andhra Pradesh, which has nine MPs each. The ruling party also believes in the support of 5 appointed MPs and 2 independent MPs, bringing the total number of party members to 130.

The opposition coalition INDIA has 104 MPs. Some of them are sick and may not attend the procedure. Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi party has been suspended from the House of Commons.Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party and two other parties, each with one member, were also unable to join. Any absence would reduce the majority score and the bill’s likelihood of passing.
