If done with good intentions…”: Prashant Kishor’s warning on ‘One Nation, One Choice’

Kishor’s initial support comes as several opposition parties criticized the BJP on the issue; Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday called the idea an attack on the Indian Union

Prashant Kishor offered conditional support for the “one nation, one election” proposal, conceding that it is “in the interest of the country … if done with correct intentions”. Kishor – an election strategist who has led several parties to victory, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party – said the benefits of a single poll could reduce costs and tire voters. He also said the “overnight changes” – seen by many as a sweep by the BJP to allow them to go ahead with the 2024 general elections, which coincide with state elections later this year – could spell trouble.

“If it is done with the right intentions and there (is) a transition period of four or five years, then it is in the interest of the country. It used to be valid for 17-18 years.”

“A country as big as India gets about 25 percent of the votes every year. So the people who run the government are busy in that constituency. If it is limited to one or two times, it is better. It reduces the cost and people . have to make a decision only once…”

“(But) if you try to move suddenly, there will be problems. The government might make a bill. to move forward If the government has good intentions, it should happen and will be good for the country, Kishor said
