Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee – on her way to Spain to seek investment – met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe at Dubai airport. The conversation between the two leaders was apparently about politics, and the president asked an important question that is on many minds.
“Can I ask you one question,” Mr. Wickremesinghe is heard saying in a short video that was circulated online. As Banerjee agreed, he said, “Are you leading the opposition alliance? We are all amazed.”
“Oh my god,” said the Bengali prime minister, completely taken aback. He then added with a laugh: “It depends on the will of the people, you know… If the people support us, we can be in a position (in power) tomorrow.”
The opposition front INDIA (National Development Inclusive Alliance of India) is currently led by the Collectin=ve leadership, and who it will later choose as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has many people interested.
The frontline leaders remained silent, indicating that there are many qualifiers and the call can be made when the time comes. The issue of leadership has proved divisive for most opposition fronts in the past, as many leaders have not seen a congress of the bloc’s largest national party.
This time, the Congress tried to take a back seat, giving a favorable position to other leaders like Ms. Banerjee, her Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar and Maharashtra’s Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray.
