Rahul to lay foundation of Sevagram tomorrow

To mark the 75th year of independence and retain Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj, Sevagram is going to be established in Nava Raipur. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will lay the foundation stone on February 3.

According to a communication from the Chhattisgarh government, around 75 acres of land has been earmarked for the construction of Sevagram — a replicate of the one at Wardha in Maharashtra.

The Sevagram is being established to carry forward the works of village reform. It will be a place where visitors can learn about regional arts and crafts as well as regional cuisine. It will also have an open theater, the statement said.

The young generation will be apprised of the Gandhian ideology through it. The place will be enveloped by greenery. Local construction material will be used to accord it a traditional and rural look.

There would also be provision of old age homes and schools for the underprivileged in it. The memories of the freedom movement and the national history will be kept alive there, it added.

Sevagram in Wardha came up in 1936 as the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba.
