Cricket World Cup: Ricky Ponting says Australia looked a ‘fair way off mark’ versus India | Cricket-world-cup News
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said that the five-time World Cup winners Australia looked a ‘fair way off the mark’ in their opener against India, where they tasted defeat six wickets.
Ponting was scathing with his verdict on the defeat.
Talking to the The ICC Review podcast, Ponting said: “Australia, to me, looked to be a fair way off the mark, to be honest, in that game against India. You can’t afford to be zip-and-two (0-2) in a World Cup. We know how important it is to finish up the top of the table.”

In the 10-team tournament, each team will play each other once before the top four in the standings make it through to the semi-finals. This leaves teams with limited wiggle room for errors.
One of the turning points from the game was Mitchell Marsh dropping a catch of Virat Kohli. Ponting singled that moment as an indicator of sorts.
“There’s an old adage in our game, and I don’t need to repeat it, but it’s just another one of those little signs to me that Australia were just a little bit off game one,” Ponting said. “The best teams that I’ve ever seen have always been great fielding teams. They make very few makes. Teams that win World Cups are the teams that make the fewest makes through a tournament.”
