I felt like a gladiator there: Mayank Agarwal recalls his Boxing Day Test debut in Australia
Mayank Agarwal, who is a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League 2023, has recalled his Test debut for India against Australia at the MCG 26 December 2018. Mayank played knocks of 76 and 42 in his first Test match India won 137 runs.
“Simply put, in a few words. I felt like I said that before I think that it was about 80-odd thousand people on the first day and we batted first. I just felt like like a gladiator in between there. The massive stadium with so much hory. The series on the line. It was 1-1. I was very happy and got right into the action. I really enjoyed it you know, I know the heartbeat was like real fast but yeah once I played a couple of overs, I really got into it. Then I got into the rhythm and once I got into the rhythm, I kept flowing,” Mayak said in a video interview with his franchise SRH.
Mayank, who has played 21 Tests for India now, has an average of 41.33 with 4 centuries and 6 half centuries under his belt. The 32-year-old batter said playing Down Under and winning the series twice was a phenomenal feeling. “I think it’s an amazing place to play cricket. The kind of intensity with which they play, you know how hard they play cricket, is something that I admire.
Yeah, so, when we were there, and when we won there, that feeling is indescribable. Like, I cannot express. A lot of people and a lot of players, a lot of countries have gone there and played some really good cricket and for us to go there and win it twice. Being a part of two tours is a phenomenal feeling. It’s just not so much happiness, I’m really proud that you’ve contributed to the horic moments in whichever way but just the feeling of having contributed to the nostalgia is just a phenomenal thing.”
SRH will take on Rajasthan Royals in its IPL 2023 opener on April 2 in Hyderabad. The team had a poor IPL 2022 campaign where it finished eighth in the standings after the league stage.
