India vs South Africa: When S Sreesanth hit Andre Nel for a 6 and proceeded to dance | Cricket News
After edging past Australia and clinching the recent T20I series 4-1, the Indian contingent will travel to South Africa for a series which will start from December 10 with the first T20 match. Whenever India have faced South Africa in years past, every series has had its fair share of talking points. The 2004/06 series was no different with the second Test at the Wanderers going down in cricket folklore for one player in particular- S Sreesanth.
Sreesanth was the man of the match in that Test and helped India to their first-ever Test win in South Africa with his 8-wicket haul, including a fifer in the first innings. But all that was overshadowed due to an exchange the Indian bowler had with the bat against Protea pacer Andre Nel.
On the third day of the Test, Nel had tried to get under the skin of Sreesanth, even saying ‘you are not good enough,, as revealed Indian star in an interview. Sreesanth would give it back in kind, however, when he smashed Nel over the head for a huge six and proceeded to do a little dance.
“You should be thankful to Mahatma Gandhi,” Sreesanth recalled telling Nel.
“I told them a lot of things. The message was clear; don’t mess with this Indian team. They always believed they wouldn’t get it back. Dada (Sourav Ganguly) started (to give it back). I was kindergarten. He was a PhD. And I think Virat Kohli is also a doctorate. I cared a damn if people thought I was mad,” Sreesanth had added.
“To be honest, I can’t remember what I said. It was a heat of the moment thing and probably something along the lines of ‘I’ve got more heart than you’. I honestly couldn’t say for sure,” Nel had said to Cricbuzz in 2018.
“I never saw him celebrate. When you’ve been hit for six after giving a guy a lot of lip you have no choice but to put your tail between your legs and turn around. But it was great fun. I always looked for a fight on the field and loved it when someone would come back at me,” he said when he was asked if he had seen Sreesanth’s celebration.
