Addressing parliament yesterday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked why the Prime Minister has yet to visit Manipur. “The prime minister didn’t come to Manipur because he doesn’t consider it a part of India. You (BJP) have divided Manipur,” he said amid strong protests from treasury banks.
Union Interior Minister Amit Shah presented the center’s achievement in tackling Covid and the threat of drugs. He also clarified the government’s efforts to curb violence in Manipur and alleged that the no-confidence move was designed to “mislead people”.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has confirmed that the prime minister will be in Lok Sabha on Thursday to address the motion of no confidence. The opposition has asked the prime minister to speak on the Manipur issue in parliament.
The center had previously agreed to resume negotiations regarding the Manipur violence on August 11, the last day of the monsoon. But the opposition does not accept the date, sources said.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has 331 members in the Lok Sabha, is expected to undergo a vote of no confidence. The BJP alone has 303 MPs in the House of Representatives with a majority of 272. The opposition INDE coalition has 144 MPs and this number could rise to 152 if it wins all nine BRS votes. In addition, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP and Naveen Patnaik’s BJD have a total of 70 members. BJD does not support unconfident movements
