Ready for the polls in Jammu and Kashmir at any time, the Center told the Supreme Court

The Center told the Supreme Court today that elections can be held in Jammu and Kashmir at any time, but the decision rests with the Election Commission and the state election commission.

A group of five judges headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was told by General Counsel Tushar Mehta that Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases: first there will be panchayat votes, then there will be panchayat elections. vote at the municipal level, followed by a vote in the Legislative Council.

These statements were made during a hearing on a series of petitions challenging the removal of Section 370. In the past, the Center has argued that Jammu and Kashmir are unique and that a division is necessary. In its final hearing on Tuesday, the Supreme Court emphasized the need to restore democracy to J&K, which has had no elected government since June 2018.

However, during today’s hearing, the Center declined to provide a timetable for the restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
